Haritina

Home – Newport, TN

When her husband left home
to fight for Russia
against the Japanese threat,
Haritina Korotkevich followed him,
first by working as a railroad brakeman,
then disguising herself as a man
to enlist in the Russian Army.
As she rose through the ranks
she became known as an able soldier
and leader of men.
A woman of compassion,
she cared for her enemies
in the midst of battle.
After her husband was wounded
she took the role of messenger,
carrying instructions to the front lines
through heavy Japanese fire.
It was on one of these missions
she lost her life
to an artillery shell.
She was buried on the battlefield
under a cross declaring her
“The Bravest of Russian Women.”
